Independent Traveler's New Zealand 2000
Out of the three books I have purchased, this will be the one to go with us to New Zealand. I especially like the detailed maps about each specific area. Since this is a once in a lifetime trip my husband and I are planning, we want to know as much as possible by the time we get there. It has wonderful suggestions for traveling on a budget, yet isn't afraid to reccommend the really good places not to overlook because of price. With all the information we have gleaned, we are starting our inquiries and reservations. We can't wait to go!

The Instant Bean
Published in Paperback by Bantam Books (June, 1996)
Authors: Sally Stone, Martin Stone, and S Stone
Average review score:

Very thorough, healthy and quick to make
I ordered several bean books in one order, hoping to find one that I would really like. Trying to incorporate beans into my diet for health reasons, I was tired of the same old recipes again and again. This book was one of the better that I ordered. I only give it 4 stars because there are no pictures. However, what impressed me was that most of the recipes are low fat. Also, there is a great diversity of ideas, including soups, appetizers, dips, salads, main dishes, side dishes, etc. One is not limited to eating beans only as a main course. It also does not limit the recipes to dishes made exclusively of beans, but dishes that include beans.
I recommend it to anyone who is just trying to eat healthier, vegetarians who must eat beans for protein or those who just enjoy the flavor and texture of beans.

Intimate Relationships, Marriages, and Families
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Humanities/Social Sciences/Languages (September, 1995)
Author: F. Philip Rice
Average review score:

Useful Text with Personal Interest to Students
I have used this for a number of Marriage and Family classes. It combines theoretical materials with contemporary issues concerning relationships and everyday family life. Its academic enough to pass muster but also interesting and personal enough to keep the students' interest. I recommend it highly.

If you can muster up a good Irish brogue and delight in the Irish folklore, you and your Irish friends & family will truly enjoy this book at Christmas time. A silly account of those troublesome Irish elves trying to help out Father Christmas. Enjoy! Nollaig Sona Agut!

Jean's Beans: Favorite Recipes from Around the World
Published in Paperback by Firefly Books (September, 1995)
Author: Jean Hoare
Average review score:

Good bean recipe book that isn't exclusively vegetarian
Almost all of the bean recipe cook books I have are vegetarian (I guess omnivores aren't supposed to eat legumes) so it was great to find a bean cook book that included both meat and meat free recipes. A lot of great recipes like ham 'n beans, french white beans, south american beans with pork, italian pasta and beans, east indian dal, carribean and many more. The wide variety of recipe styles is what makes this book a valuable addition to any cook book collection.

Joe Jusko's Art of Edgar Rice Burroughs
Published in Paperback by Friedlander Pub Group (October, 1996)
Authors: Joe Jusko, Dantion Burroughs, and Edgar Rice Burroughs
Average review score:

Edgar Rice Burroughs fans will love this stunning art book!
I was a bit leery about ordering Joe Jusco's book site unseen from Amazon.com. After viewing this beauty, I thank my lucky stars I did order it. It's gorgeous! The book contains the heroic art of E.R.Burroughs' Tarzan, Mars, Venus, and miscellanious stories. Jusco's exquisitely detailed work is hypnotic and the crisp reproductions are first rate, with vibrant colors on very high quality paper. Each picture needs to be studied for long periods to fully appreciate the incredible talent that went into creating it. My advice to Fantasy/SF art collectors is to buy this book now before it goes out of print completely. You'll only pay much more for it later on.

You CAN go home again
I bought and read a paperback copy of this book when I was 10. At the time, I enjoyed it tremendously. For decades afterwards, it gathered dust on a bookshelf. Finally, with dread of being disappointed, I decided to re-read it. To my relief and surprise, again, I enjoyed it tremendously. Adventure, friendship, honor. Edgar Rice Burroughs knows how to tell a story.

Ladders (Architecture at Rice, 34)
Published in Paperback by Princeton Architectural Press (January, 1997)
Author: Albert Pope
Average review score:

Gee-Whiz!
Review #1:Wow! This book is the bestest! Albert Pope is swell! And he loves Farley's fruit snacks!!

Review #2:Although I have never read this book, that is because here at Rice architecture it is in such high demand. The pieces of it which I have seen or read detail an objective analysis of the seemingly chaotic form of Houston. Pope forms the theory of a rational suburbia, although not a rationality of form, but rational through the processes which it introduces into the lives of its inhabitants. The daily motions and movements which Houston imposes on its residents are exposed and itemized as a series of progressive turns which hold emotive as well as logistical separation and enclosure for the suburbanites. Hopefully I will hold it in such high esteem after I have actually read it.
